September 5, 2008 - 4:13PM
Comments | RecommendChantal and Jeff moved into their 1960s-era house four years ago with two kids, loads of energy and big plans to start renovating. Plant of the week: Lettuce
November 14, 2008 - 6:52PM
Maintenance: Keep the water flowing; lettuces have root systems that are dense but shallow. To enjoy juicy, lush leaves, you must apply steady amounts of water, keeping the soil moist but not drenched. Allowing the bed to dry can cause bitterness and slow growth. Water in the morning to keep lettuce free of fungus problems caused by night watering. Extend the harvest by cutting only a few leaves at a time, or leave the bottom 2 inches of a harvested head for regrowth. After one month, apply an organic fertilizer such as fish and seaweed emulsion, bat guano or earthworm castings, and repeat every three weeks. Mulch 2 to 3 inches away from the plant base when the heat arrives.
